Remembering Amanda

proposal
Photo from Franklin’s Flying Circus on facebook

I love the proposal photo. On facebook, Kyle Franklin tells that he flew his Piper Cub to Amanda’s house, landed in her yard and asked for her hand in marriage. They were wed in October, 2005 and formed an inspiring airshow duo.

After their crash in March, I have been following Kyle’s facebook posts and praying for Amanda’s recovery. Sadly, on May 27th, Kyle posted this update:

“It is with a broken heart that I tell you that my beautiful girl Amanda passed away at 10:10 central time this evening. Beside her was her adoring husband Kyle, her mother Jeanie, her brother Matt, her sister-in-law Michelle and her devoted mother-in-law Audean.
Thank you all again for your love,
Goodnight and God bless Amanda,
Kyle”

He also added:

“Amanda my love, I love you with all my heart, soul and everything I am. Our life together here was supposed to be seventy years not seven, but I look forward to seeing you in my dreams every night my love.”

In video production (especially on the wedding side) I get to capture the stories from a very diverse group of people. Although I didn’t film their wedding, I had the honor of meeting Kyle and Amanda at the National Radial Engine Exhibition in 2008 and 2010. Amanda was very thorough in providing me with information about their performances beforehand and was a very genuine and gracious person. She remembered the details of our brief conversations and followed-up with me to make sure I had everything I needed from them. I’m thankful that Kyle and Amanda let me capture their performances and share their stories.

Amanda’s life may be finished, but her story lives on through photos, videos, and the memories of the people who met her. After watching the video I put together in my previous post, it just doesn’t seem right that someone so vibrant is gone. My heart goes out to Kyle and her family. She will be missed.

“Life is a risk. Walking across the street is a risk. Laying in your bed, you could have a heart attack. Everything is a risk. Why not do what you love?” –Amanda Franklin “Sons of Legends Gag Reel”

Thoughts and Prayers with Kyle & Amanda Franklin

Kyle and Amanda

Kyle and Amanda Franklin are amazing airshow performers. Their shows are intense and impressive. For people who want to see true talent on display, it just doesn’t get any better than watching Kyle and Amanda’s airshow routines.

Yesterday, I was saddened to receive an email that said that Kyle and Amanda had been in a crash while performing at an airshow in Brownsville, Texas. Kyle suffered severe burns and injuries and Amanda has multiple critical injuries including a broken neck, broken back and 3rd degree burns over 70% of her body.

For the past 5 years, my company has created a promotional video and TV show about the National Radial Engine Exhibition in Akron, Colorado. In 2008 and 2010 I had the opportunity to meet and interview Kyle and Amanda. They are very friendly, accomodating, and genuine people. Not only was I impressed with their talent, I was also impressed with their character.

Earlier today, I put the following clip together from my interview with Amanda and footage I shot of their “Pirated Skies” wingwalking performance at the 2010 NREE. Because of the dangerous nature of the airshow business, performers often have difficulty getting insurance. Funds have been set-up to help with their medical expenses. I hope others will join me in donating and assisting this wonderful couple.

To Kyle and Amanda, you are in my thoughts and prayers and I wish you a speedy recovery.

Habitat for Humanity — Loveland, Ft. Collins Colorado Hard Hat Gala Video

A few weeks ago, Peak Impact was contacted by Loveland Habitat for Humanity to produce a video of the 2010 Hard Hat fundraising gala. Tina and I have long been supporters of Habitat and Peak Impact was honored to donate our services for this important cause. I would like to thank Rob Smith at www.robadvertising.com for the referral!

The Loveland Habitat website begins with, “Everyone deserves a decent and affordable place to live. Give someone a chance and the world changes. Transformation begins as a dream becomes reality. The end of poverty starts here. It’s the Power of Heart, Hope and Home.” Ending poverty and providing decent housing is an important mission and, in my opinion, perhaps no organization has done more to make that dream a reality than Habitat for Humanity and their generous donors and volunteers.

The 7th Annual Hard Hat Gala was held April 10, 2010. The theme was “Voyage to Africa” and they auctioned some amazing items, including a wine tasting trip to Napa, Bruce Springsteen autographed guitar and even an African safari. A portion of the proceeds go to benefit Africa, but most of the funds will stay in the Loveland/Ft. Collins area to benefit local families in need of help.

If you missed the event this year, check out the video below and be sure to mark it on your calendar for next year! Also, check out LovelandHabitatForHumanity.org and FortCollinsHabitat.org for more information or to donate!

2010 National Radial Engine Exhibition Promotional Video

Since 2006, Peak Impact Productions, LLC has been privileged to film one of Colorado’s most exciting airshows — the National Radial Engine Exhibition in Akron, Colorado.

Akron is a small town of 1,500 people on Colorado’s Northeastern Plains. It’s a town that literally has 1 stoplight. However, most people wouldn’t guess that such a small town in “the middle of nowhere” would have an airport that is capable of handling aircraft as large as Boeing 737’s and even had airline service to Las Vegas. But every September since 2003, Akron gets to show off the Colorado Plains Regional Airport by hosting the National Radial Engine Exhibition.

The NREE attracts major airshow performers, but it also features a car show and World War II reenactment among its many attractions. The thing that I love the most about the NREE is the hometown atmosphere. Even though its attendance has grown substantially over the years, it is still a true rural barnstormer event that offers a hands-on experience like no other airshow I’ve been to.

For more information, visit the National Radial Engine Exhibition website The following is the 2010 promotional video. We hope to see you in Akron on September 11, 2010 for the 8th Annual NREE.

DWF Convention

This past week I had the privilege of attending the DWF Convention in Nashville.  The DWF is the Digital Wedding Forum which is an online forum for wedding photographers.  Being involved in forums and attending conventions are great ways for us to learn from the best and stay on top of the latest trends.

The convention was amazing!  It featured seminars by some of the best photographers in the business including Kevin Kubota, Cliff Mautner, Gene Higa, Jim Garner, and a whole day with Jerry Ghionis.  There was also a session to shoot with David Beckstead, but unfortunately my flight arrived too late for me to participate in that.

In fact, I realized after I returned that I was so enthralled with the learning experience, I only shot two photos while I was there.  While I don’t want to go into too much detail about the convention, here’s a little bit of evidence of my presence there:

It was an incredible week of education and entertainment.  I would highly recommend the DWF Convention to any photographer or videographer.
